MSP challenges decision to close Lochboisdale Dental Surgery

31 March 2017

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, has been in contact with the Western Isles IJB and NHS Western Isles asking for an explanation as to why the Lochboisdale Dental Practice has been closed with immediate effect.

Mrs Grant is extremely concerned that NHS Western Isles has taken this drastic action leaving patients in South Uist basically stranded as they attempt to find a method of undertaking a 60 mile round trip for essential dental treatment.

The MSP, who has been at the forefront of the opposition to the recent move to consolidate three essential local dental surgeries into one central hub, said

“This latest move is extremely concerning and certainly challenges credibility given the massive groundswell of public opposition to the proposed move to close the local surgeries in favour of a central hub.

“ I have been in contact with both Gordon Jamieson, Chief Executive of NHS Western Isles and Dr Ron Culley, Chief Officer, Health and Social Care, Western Isles, to ascertain the exact reasons for this drastic action of immediate closure and what is required to be done to get the surgery re-opened and when will this happen.”

Lochboisdale Dental Surgery recently started the Childsmile Week which is now being adopted by other Health Boards and resulted in NHS Western Isles becoming joint top in Scotland for Children’s Dental Health.

The MSP concluded :

“Whilst I understand the findings from this examination and that the building may require some works it is imperative these are done immediately or that one of the other already highlighted local alternative sites be used until a permanent solution can be put in place."
